Great little radio for family ski trip
I purchased two pairs of Cobra PR 3000 GMRS 2 watt radios for our ski trip this year. It's one of the best purchases I ever made. I looked at Motorola and Midland before purchasing these. They have more power than Motorola and better built than Midland. I like that most of the buttons are on the face and you don't have to do a lot of menu browsing. We skied at Alta and Snowbird Utah. The ability to talk over the slopes really amazed me. We tried them out in our neighborhood and they worked pretty well. We could converse for a half mile with no trouble at all through trees and houses. However if you go behind a hill the ability to converse is greatly reduced. At Alta Snowbird you are in a canyon with granite walls, so I think the signal is bouncing off the canyon walls, becuase we could talk for miles, even with ridges between us. At the frequencies and power levels of these radios you should get great reception if you are in line of sight without too many obstructions. But don't expect to go much over a half mile if you have a lot of obstructions. If you are true line of sight with no obstructions, you can go further than the 5 miles advertised. In a granite canyon like little cottonwood canyon they were great! We were in a group of 8 skiers and it was snowing hard and difficult to stay together. My 12 year old daughter got separated from us and called in to let us know where she was. It saved hours of anxiety for us and kept us from ruining our ski day. Same thing happened the next day with my 11 year old daughter. As far as I'm concerned it was well worth the price.

Worked pretty well on our cruise
My family bought Cobra PR 3000 radios for a cruise in December 2003 and were pleased overall.

They are simple to use. The LCD display is excellent. Volume and voice quality were good. The CTCSS tones worked well to screen out the many other passengers who had similar radios.

They are light and small enough that it was never a chore to carry them.

We often used the call signal and vibration features to initiate contact, because those work better than a voice in noisy areas.(Too bad those features are missing from every higher-powered, commercial-quality radio I've found.)

On the down side, within 48 hours of use, the poorly designed pocket clips broke off two of the four radios.

And their power and range were less than ideal. At high power (2 watts), we could easily communicate between five decks. Reception was sketchier or non-existent when trying to communicate from the bow on deck 11 to the stern on deck 3.

Ashore, the radios worked well over about 1/2 mile of hilly terrain. Beyond that, little or nothing. They did much better over open water, of course.

Cobra does make a 3-watt model, which might perform slightly better. But the built-in stubby antenna on all Cobras limits their performance, from what I've read of how UHF radio works.

Commercial radios, which would undoubtedly perform better, cost at least $130 each and are far less user-friendly. Makers include Icom and Vertex.

Not real good
I bought this to communicate with friends for a cruise in Mexico. They did not work well on the ship, at all. Basically you had to be 50 feet away for them to work.

Hi! I'm the 37 year old again. Back to the story. Rachel, my daughter, and I went on the internet again with her lemonade money. Well, Rachel's the Computer Wizard and went on the computer herself. She yelled "Mommie! I found a good pair of walkie-talkies! Pretty Colors too!" I ran in and I thought they were junk like the "Elite Operations Officer Walkie- Talkie". I'm a sucker for the puppy dog face. Well, it turns out Rachel knew it. You know what happened next. We got the walkie-talkies and Rachel gave one to her friend Sulema and I was amazed at how well they worked. No statick. And whoever got on thier chanell, the two girls could go on an other one. Perfect and worth the money!

A key feature of the radio are the ten NOAA weather channels. An excellent radio at an excellent price
I have found the COBRA PR 4000 one of the best radios I have ever used. It has great range and many features. It is well built and easy to use.

I would highly recommend this radio.

Solid, Consistent Quality & Performance
My family have owned four of the PR-4000 radios for almost year, and just purchased a PR-4250. They have consistently outperformed every other radio we have tried in the middle area of the market. The battery life on NiMh batteries is amazing. We have sometimes monitored our usual channel and CTCSS pair sometimes for two to three days at a time, including periodic usage!

As for the range, we get a range consistent with an urban use of a UHF transceiver with 3 watt output, and the receiver sensitivity described int the manual. (The switchable 3,2,.5 power output is much appreciated--especially when communicating with other radios using less power.)

Do not expect the seven or ten miles promised on the package. But this is true for any UHF handheld. I think the only way to get that would be for both parties to be on open water and climb the masts on their sailboats... (I really do wish the manufacturers would stop these milage claims.)

So far, these are the best for the money we have found.

License REQUIRED
There is a license required for GMRS radios. It is $75. Funny how the merchants don't tell you that. Perhaps because of the "extra" cost? By the way... the fine for unlicensed operation of these radios is up to $10,000.

Motorola CLS140
This radio is used in our warehouse/manufacturing facility. Plant wide we have around 20 in use for ~2+ years with no failures. They are a good radio for heavy use. The CLS1410 has 4 channels which is nice if you have different groups using radios.

Great but pricey
I bought these for my company which runs large scale productions and runs a movie festival. They work great with the optional headsets, even in loud environments. I would give 5 stars but I feel like they are too expensive for what they are.

Good radios with a nice set of features but not perfect.
PROS*
COMFORT: They have a good fit and feel solid in my hand - not so small that they feel like a toy and certainly nothing like the old school walkie-talkie.

RECEPTION: The radios are crystal clear and have many channel and privacy options to select from. Reception for NOAA weather radio also works very well. Weather stations are clear if you are within about 50 miles of the transmitter.

BATTERY LIFE: Adequate for normal use. With constant monitoring and moderate transmitting they last a full day with no problem. The base charger is handy if you use the supplied batteries.

AA BATTERIES: One great selling point for me was the option of replacing the AA batteries if it became necessary. I bought these during the Katrina mess and wanted something that I could use regular alkaline batteries in if I had no other options. Believe me when I tell you that when the power goes out for weeks, aside from drinking water, there are few things more precious than a good set of spare batteries. When all other technology becomes useless a good set of batteries may be all that stands between you and news from the outside world, and having spare AA's is a simple swap if needed. For a field or emergency radio this should be a HUGE consideration.

CONS*
RANGE: They claim 12 miles. I suppose you could get 12 miles in the cold vacuum of deep space, but not anywhere near that on earth. The best I've seen was about 2.5 to 3 miles cross country.

WON'T CHARGE HI-CAP BATTERIES: While battery life is adequate for a full day using the supplied nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, they have a capacity rating of only 1000 milliamp hours (mAh). Most MiMH batteries in the AA size that I've seen have capacity ratings from as low as 1600mAh to as high as 2750mAh. The higher the capacity rating the longer they will operate on a full charge, but don't try charging a higher capacity battery while in the radio because it won't work. With high capacity batteries installed, circuitry in the radio will not engage the charger even if the radios are stone dead. I tried a charger with the same voltage but higher output and it still didn't work. However; you can still use high capacity batteries with the radios as long as they have been fully charged in an external charger. If you own a digital camera or anything else that eats batteries you may already have one. Just check the charger for a label stating it is suitable for charging your type of battery.

MENU: The menu is not very intuitive. You scroll through options that are clear enough at first, but going below the top level of the menu can become confusing if you don't do it often enough to remember the steps. This is a common issue with all portable radios of this type so don't let this get in your way.

NOTE: I used these radios probably 3 times for a total of no more than 14 hours when one of them stopped transmitting. They were out of warranty but I sent Cobra a letter explaining the situation. The radios were in mint condition and have never seen dirt or water. Cobra stepped up and repaired the radio at no cost to me. I did not expect them to honor a warranty repair since the warranty coverage had expired, but they repaired the unit and Fed-X'd it back in less than two week. This is the kind of customer service I will remember when I need another pair of radios.

With the few issues I will still give the radios a high score because of the form, features, clarity, and because Cobra stood behind their product.

Very good, Great Preformance.
These radios work very well. The other model the one the one under this I think its the 3500, has a better screen layout that I liked better. And some of the quality was better on the older model. But with this model I found a better preformance with signal. I pick up more signals and they were clearer on the 3800. So overall this is the best preformance radio. And rechargeable batteries with the stand, you can't beat that.

Bought in Aug 2006 and tested in several occasions; don't know if really covers the promised 12 miles however surely covers a great distance, with pretty clear sound.
The VOX feature saved our new year's eve party as it made the thing act as a reliable baby monitor.
Pretty light weight and the charging base is really convenient.

Be Warned GMRS requires an $85.00 FCC license
Be warned GMRS channels require an FCC license which costs $85.00. It takes a couple days to get this license, you can do it on the Internet. These radios are on UHF which does penetrate the bricks-and-mortar better than VHF radios would (e.g. MURS Radios) but the low power and relatively inefficient rubber ducky antennas don't give you much range. Have someone drive in a car and someone stay in a house and you'd be lucky to get a mile out of them. Channels 1-7 are FRS and GMRS shared but if you don't have the GMRS license then you ARE an FRS user, which means just 1/2 watt power and 1/2 the modulation (1/2 deviation for FM radio technicians). If the radio won't work in these FRS specs on these channels then you better have a GMRS license. Channels 8-14 are FRS only. Channels 15-22 are GMRS only. Again you better have a license. There are repeaters in some cities on GMRS only frequencies many are grandfathered business users.

These things are great for relatively short distances. Make sure you hit "Monitor" and see if anyone else is talking before you transmit. These radios have "Privacy Tones" which is basically TONE SQUELCH. You won't hear anybody else if you have this on. But they could still be there either with no tone or a different tone.

If you live in a corn field buy this. If you do not please save your mone. I purchased it to
communicate with my store that is 3 miles from
my home. It worked great around the house. When
my husband went to the store at 1 mile away he
could not connect to me. I called cobra they told me the range was for a corn field or open
spaces. Iguess if your a hiker like the other
reviewer thats great. If you need to communicate in the real world of brick and mortar forget it. cobra should explain on the
packaging the true range bedroom to bathroom only.

Great for group hikes and road trips
I just got back from a two-week geology field study trip through the Rocky Mountains with 24 other people. The group was in three vans going through mostly rural areas (i.e., no mobile phone service), so naturally radio communication between the vans was essential. The Cobras were great! Because of the power-saving mode, the batteries lasted the entire trip, even though the radios were powered on for several (often many) hours each day. Also, the radios were very useful when the group split up while hiking: half the group could climb Wheeler Peak in Nevada, while the other half hiked to a glacier 2000 feet below the peak, and everyone could hike at their own pace, while we all stayed in contact with one another. (We were using a GMRS frequency; I can't speak to whether an FRS frequency would have worked as well.)

The only slightly annoying thing about the power-save mode is that, while the battery life is GREATLY extended, the person transmitting has to remember to wait a couple seconds between pressing the "transmit" button and beginning to speak. Otherwise, the first couple seconds of the transmission will not be heard, because it takes that long for the receiving radio(s) to "wake up" from the power-save mode and realize that a transmission is coming in. However, you can turn off the automatic power-save function if you find this irritating or if the people in your group can't remember to wait the 2 seconds before speaking.

All in all, I'd highly recommend these radios. Especially for the price!

Works as intended, powerful.
Our building rendered other 2-way radios and walkie-talkies useless from one end of the building to the other and from inside to outside. The Motorola XU2600 works great for us. We no longer have communication issues. Thanks Motorola!

One of the Best and Better than the Rest !
UPDATE: July 2007 Just be sure that the product is fresh, current, and is in fact the current (red label) version - some of the older (white label) versions are appearing for sale that have first version defects. They are no longer supported. The red label XTN radios on the other hand are great and have a near zero falure rate.

This is a very interesting radio. It replaces and way exceeds the now obsolete M-series Motorola Mu24cvs 4 channel radios. The M-series radios were so good that the XTN would have go a bit to beat them. Beat them it does.

A few points: These new radios are six (6) channels selecting from a library of 56 internal frequencies whereas the M radios were only four (4) channels selecting from a library of 8 internal frequencies. The XTN radios also can use the digital (DPL) privacy or private line codes that were not available to the M series. The XTN radios are compatible with the M series and they do work well together. Battery life is double for the XTN units: nearly 16 hours use before recharging. The old M series radios barely did 6 hours. The output power is a solid and full 2 real watts something sadly one never finds on the M series radios after only a little use. Those old guys only test out at about 1.4 watts average on the bench. The VOX really works on the newer XTN's and was pretty poor on the M series. Also VOX will work with the internal radio mic if desired which is a plus not found on the M series. The charging systems are way advanced over the M series systems and the batteries are amazing and last seemingly forever.

The bottom line is the XU2600 is one of the best UHF small business radios Motorola makes. They are nearly impossible to kill by dropping unlike the M series. The XTN radios produce a killer receive volume level making them useful in the nosiest environments; they also speak in a low whisper so very clearly. The transmit audio is truly great and the operating range is tops with the new compression and transmission algorithms. Side by side no M series radio of the same wattage talks nearly as far.

About the only things we find on the down side is that the antenna cannot be removed, so an external antenna impossible, and the volume control knob can be knocked off with the right accidental bump.

These radios are not toys and operate on assigned business frequencies/ A valid FCC license must be obtained prior to use. The license can be applied for online at the FCC website but it is way better to simply pay a frequency coordination company to do this complex work for you.

About range claims
When looking at FRS/GMRS Radios radios ignore the marketing ploys that tell you the range of the radios (12 miles, 18 miles, 22 miles). All of the radios sold to the general public (except high end models- over $100 per individual radio) have the same power output rating- 1/2 a watt for FRS and 2 watts for GMRS. All other things being equal- every radio will have the excact same range. Why do you think that the more expensive the radio the farther a range the manufacturer says it has? Because they want you to THINK a more expensive radio has a farther range so you will buy the more expensive one. But they all have the same power output- meaning they will essentially have the same range. This is all a marketing PLOY to get you to buy a more expensive radio. A more expensive radio may have more features, but if the power output is the same the range will essentially be the same. You can look for the power output on the manufacturer's website, but I have researced this already- almost all models sold to the general public have 1/2 a watt for FRS and 2 watts for GMRS. With the power rating being the same the things that will affect range are antenna size, height of the transmitter, and terrain- usually things you will have little control over. So buy a radio that has the features and size you want and ignore the marketing ploys about the range.

Great Radios
i got these and the first thing i wanted to do is test them to see how far they went. I called up my friend who lives about 10mi away and on channel 15 we could hear each other clearly. Remember u Got to be on High power. Go for them. As far as I know with Li-ion batteries they are a must!

much better than the consumer level units
I have been renting $500 per unit Motorola radios since the 80's. In the last decade there have been many "consumer level" radios flooding the market; I have tested many, but then never come anything close to the claimed distances. These ones work well indoor and out. I have 8 of them and they get dropped a lot if crew members are not using a hand held mic. None have broken yet, but I would recommend a hand mic. I use a surveillance headset that Amazon doesn't sell. Amazon only sells the yellow ones- that is actually an advantage as they are much harder to loose than the black ones. I needed a black one and I just popped off the cover, and put 10 coats of BBQ paint on it, and it is holding up well: yellow is good. Note- don't expect to pull it out of the box and start using it well! Certain frequencies are low power, and if you are not familiar with the settings, you will get caught scratching your head.

Best Walkie-Talkie Set This set, for those whose wallets aren't bottomless, is as good as it gets. They come with compact headsets, the walkie-talkies have incredibly fast VOX response, they have a dock charger and come with chargeable batteries, the dock charger has an AC adapter and a cigarette lighter adapter, they're noise suppression systems are excellent and their range is great. Love them.
Great radios I am most happy with these radios. They look wonderful,operate effeciently and have a long battery life.
A NICE PAIR!! I've had these for only 2 days and I couldn't be happier. The range and clarity are great, even on low power. Even amongst trees and buildings, I was able to hear and transmit clearly for at least a mile to 1 1/2 miles. I've yet to use the high power feature on channels, 1-7 and 15-22 but I will very soon. I'm a weather spotter so these are going to come in really handy once Spring gets here in a few months. These are definitely worthy of a 5 star rating especially for the price.

Aweful Battery life These were rated for 12miles - and if you've ever done any research on these type of 2-way radios...regardless of the rating, if you're able to get a 1 mile range from them, you're a lucky few. I fully expected that disappointment. However, what I did not expect was that the rechargeable batteries that it came with were aweful. On a full charge, it barely lasted a trip to the mall on less than mild usage. Btw...there is no indicator to say if it is fully charged. I charged it for the recommended 10 hrs. Anyway...I had another pair of refurb Uniden that I got for almost nothing...that pair was just as good, if not better than this one which I paid $45 including shipping. Not a recommendation.

Very nice GPS for hiking. Bought after using a Walkie Talkie Garmin Rino 120 for several years. Great unit if you don't need night vision compatibility.

Color screen is easy on the eyes, larger than the older model. Still uses Motorola accessories and has great features. Downside is the battery charger connector seems easy to detach from the cable.

This charging cable should have been a one piece unit. I rate this a five as it does very well for hiking and navigating around. Well made and the battery life is great.

Can use mine for several days on a charge or longer if I turn it on only when needed. Large memory capacity allows me to load up many points and maps. Just wish the newer model with cards had come out sooner, would have liked that feature, and not up for buying a newer one just for that option....yet. Great for sending location and works with legacy Rino's as well. (Used a Rino 120 for a while before.) Buy this radio/GPS, or one like it with the removable memory cards.

forgot something Love this item and will use it in the near future camping and it even worked while I was in Iraq. did not come with any maps but does have the basic important lines for the states and main highways. Would recomend this but ensure that you know that you do not get any cool maps with this. you must buy them and they can be quite pricey.

Don't use this as your MAIN map! I bought this, went on a hike, and after 30 way-points, it shut off! When I turned it back on, my route was erased! And no, I didn't press the power button. Geesh. So, I returned it, got another one.

A week later, I got the second one, went on a hike, and poof! After 30 way-points, off it goes! Lost way-points! If I was in an emergency, and needed to find my way back, and this thing turns off... i'll be in a pickle, right? I know what you're thinking 'cause I think it as well when I read these reviews, "This guy is an idiot, he's hitting the power button.

" Well, I was in the Army, in charge of the way-points on the Force XXI Battle Command system in iraq. I know how to use these things. So, do as you like, just know I wouldn't recommend you having this 'adventurer attitude' that you can go in the woods with it and always find your way back, cause you wont if you lose your way-points or trails. So in conclusion, as for being rugged, its a 5-star. For great features, 5-stars, awesome color screen, 5-stars yet again.

But if the thing is going to lose my way-points, how can I recommend it to anyone? One star, no soup for you.

RE: Warning: Walkie Talkie Garmin Rino should not be used in Iraq For anyone concerned about giving away a position in Iraq, why not go into the radio setup menu, disable the "Send Location" feature under the Send Location tab, and disable position polling under the Allow Polling tab? If these features are disabled, the Rino will not send its position when the radio is keyed. People really should read their user manuals.

wish both of them worked Big tip...set up is fairly easy...but read the WHOLE manual TWICE!!! before attempting set up! One of the two I bought had a short circuit in it somewhere and didn't work for very long (should a set up before the big hunting trip!). It got pretty hot then just quit. The other one was fine..batteries lasted a day and a half...it did lose satelite in some of the deeper valleys when we were high in the mountains but regained 2D sat nav soon enough. I liked the tracking feature. I marked junctions in some of the logging roads and it led me right back the way I came. I also liked knowing the elevation.

The best time to hunt and fish feature was cool...(jury's still out on usefulness though) Navigating the screens was not simple and the menu select button is a little touchy. It will scroll up/down or left/right when you just want to select (push in) if you get even a little off center when you push it. Before the other one died it did store a location in the working unit and I liked knowing exactly how far away I was getting from the last known location of the defective unit. I can't wait to recieve the repaired unit. I'll let you know how long it takes Garmin to fix and repair or replace the defective unit....to be continued!

Warning: Walkie Talkie Garmin Rino should not be used in Iraq There are several testimonials from soldiers who have used/are using the Rino 110 in Iraq or concerned loved ones looking to buy one for their Soldier. While commercial GPS receivers have definitely filled a gap (the old PLGR is laughably outdated, and the new DAGR is more complicated than what you can buy off the shelf), the Army Program Manager for GPS has specifically target the Garmin Rino as a security risk.

Every time the mic is keyed, the Walkie Talkie Garmin Rino broadcasts the sender's location over a non-secure channel to anyone on that same channel. With the built-in scanner, anyone with a Rino 110 within range can pick up the transmission and determine the sender's location--including our enemies. So, every time you key the mic in the FOB, you may be giving away important locational data to the insurgents--especially if you and your buddy use the radio to find each other. "Hey, I'm in the DFAC, where are you?" "I'm at the PX". I'm not saying that the Garmin Rino is a bad GPS receiver; I'm sure it works fine. But if you're a Soldier or are buying a GPS receiver for a Soldier, you should probably look elsewhere.

Walkie talkie These are great, have used them for a year now and no problems....in fact I bought another pair for a friend for Christmas this year. We use them while going to and from car shows and cruise inns to communicate, we are seldom more than a mile apart and have saved a lot of trouble by being able to talk to each other

Paintball: Works well in the woods I bought the Talkabout SX700R to use for scenario paintball and the SPPL, and I have been pleased with it. I carry it on my (on-gun) tank so I can use it while aiming. It is easy to push the buttons with gloves on, I can hear what everyone is saying (as long as I don't put it in my pants pocket) and I can quickly and easily turn the volume up and down. Plus, I can set it to vibrate when I get a call, so I can turn off the alert. The field I usually play is about 400 acres, laid out long and narrow. I can easily get a hold of teammates that are 1/4 mile away from me through the trees. I haven't had to try it much further than that. I never have break-up when people talk, though if they aren't holding thier radios correctly they can be hard to understand. The radio is sealed well. It has been shot, dropped on the ground, dropped in mud, etc. and always works. The clips are kind of junk, though. I broke one already. All in all, I can recommend this radio for paintball. Very Impressed! Great product! I purchased the TriSquare handheld radio for a cruise I took with my family in Dec. 2007 as I knew my cell phone would not work while at sea and I wanted to keep track of my kids. The Walkie Talkie TriSquare TSX-100 worked very well. I was quite impressed. Very easy to use and my kids loved them. I have a pair of Motorola handheld radios that do not work nearly as good as the Walkie Talkie TriSquare. Reception is good while I remain in the house and my kids are in the neighborhood a few blocks away. I would certainly purchase again.

Great item! I was really impressed with the quality of this product even at the low price. Definitely will come in handy on vacations or when traveling in more than one vehicle.
Big waste of money These two-way radios are a waste of money. The battery life is too short to get much use out of them. They're going to Goodwill and I'm shopping for something better quality. I can't believe Uniden put their name on such a bad product.

Best buy for your buck!! I used these camping with two others who also had them...set them to group setting and can use them like telephones between the three of us. You can call individuals or the whole group and you program in a name for each radio so when it rings you even know who is calling. For my use, in the RV park/Campground they couldn't have worked better...worth ever penny!! Am even planning on buying a few more units to give out as gifts. We also used them while off-roading in the mountains and they worked great...now I never tested them over a 3 mile seperation so I can't comment on the long range aspect but for 3 miles and under 5 stars!!!

Walkie Talkie Cobra In open land they work very well, loud and clear. From car to car in traffic the distance is limited to about five miles.

Walkie Talkie Cobra LI7000-2 WX VP I have owned several of the "high power" radios from Cobra, Motorola, and Midland. Range has become a big problem in these discussions. Be advised that manufacturers' claims for distance are irrelevant and their claims for "5 watts" output are misleading. According to the FCC, the actual rated power output on these units at the antenna is about 1.25 watts. That's actually pretty good for consumer GMRS radios. Of the new models, I think only the Midland's put out slightly more at 1.6 watts. Midland GXT800VP4 22-Channel 26-Mile GMRS 2-Way Radio (Pair) These radios get high marks for their compact size. However, the lithium batteries heat-up noticeably under heavy transmission. For occasional use (which would be more typical), they should be fine. I have avoided the DCS privacy codes, so delayed transmission has not been a problem. They seem to work fine with just CTCSS codes. The DCS problem could be a design flaw. Sound quality is surprisingly good given the tiny speakers. Also, sometimes I had trouble indexing my finger correctly over the small transmit button that can get lost under the much larger rubber cover on the side of the radio, causing me to think I was transmitting when I really wasn't. This could be a problem when operating with cold hands or gloves. Due in part to the short antenna, plan on maybe 4 miles range on reasonably flat terrain. Less when hills, trees and/or buildings clutter the line of sight. Maybe 1/2 mile car to car. I can't comment on the durability of the lithium batteries. So far they are working OK.

Excellent radios I purchased my first Cobra FRS 3 mile radios around 9 years ago and still work perfectly. The LI 7000 radios are a huge evolution in range, features and specialy battery capacity (1500 mAh) which is the best I've seen for this radio type. In regard to the range you can select the power setting acording your needs and be aware that channels 8-14 work only on LOW power setting because they are FRS; for channels 1-7 (FRS/GMRS) and 15-22 (GMRS) you can select HI, MED or LOW. I use them successfully from my office to a 4 mile range into the city with the Hi power setting and channels 1 through 7.

Awesome 2-way Battery lasts much longer than my old audiovox radio. The only negative I've experienced so far is you need to really press hard on the keys/buttons, other than that this is an awesome 2-way radio.

Good for around the farm We have a farm that is located in a cell phone dead zone. When my wife tries to call me for lunch or to check on me when I am in the field the phone will not work. We read the reviews on the Walkie Talkie Cobra LI 6500-2 and decided to give them a try. We have tested them from 10 miles out and they will not cover that distance around here but luckily my farm is not near that size. I can get reception from about 2 to 5 miles depending on trees and hills and that is enough. They are easy to use and the price was right for our limited use. The call function is great and the size is great. The channels come in clear but be warned 20 miles is a long way. They might work on water but not in the hills.

20 miles??? With the exception of the range reception, this is a fine radio set. They are compact, and easy to use, the vibration feature is also appreciated. The best set of four that we have used. We always find that Cobra seems better than other makes. The problem of reception was encountered on a 700 mile trip, when we were in two cars. The reception was only good for a distance up to 4 or 5 miles between the cars on an Interstate flat non mountainous highway. However in open land out in the country they seem to work fine, but we are unable to vouch for distant reception there.

Works OK I purchased this set of radios, and they worked good at close range and at a 1/2 mile their was a lot of static. I am sending them back because they also eat batteries.

Just having the radio on and not using it, the batteries would go dead in 4 hrs and half that time if you used the radio, I tried three different types of batteries and had the same results with all of them.
Works as advertised Like most digital products the audio is not very good but is understandable.

Not quite as good as a regular phone line.. sorta like the poor audio you get from a GSM cell phone. Propagation is almost exactly the same as FRS/GMRS radios except slightly better in buildings due to the higher frequency.

The rechargeable battery pack with the drop in charger set up is brilliant in its design so you can use AA cells when the rechargeable goes dead.

Gripes-- Text messaging does not handshake to confirm delivery of the message so if coverage is spotty you may lose a message and not know it. belt clip is really mickey mouse and flimsy. I suggest throwing it away and getting an old cell phone case or something if you want to put it on your belt. Wants-- a full duplex model. A repeater you can put on a building to extend the range also full duplex capable.

Great little radios for the money These radios have better range than my Motorola GMRS radios and have great clarity at range. I've noticed that there is a short delay, or echo which sounds pretty cool actually; if the radios are too close (aka within 30 feet or so) the sound quality is not so great, not sure why.

Caller ID and text messaging work great as long as you're able to get decent reception from the other radio, and I really like the option to have your radio set to vibrate on call, so you can be called silently.

Tried to tune in on these with a handheld scanner sporting SignalStalker (automatic frequency acquisition) and it was unable to; by the time it got a fix the radios had already hopped to another frequency (manual says they hop 10x per second).

The included headsets are very uncomfortable and have poor sound pickup (unless you cup your hand in front of your mouth and bounce your voice back to it). Have been thinking about getting some better headsets and seeing if they work with this radio. Really well designed removable belt clips, reduces fumbling around for the radio.

JUNK!!! What a piece of junk - I would have given it 0 stars but that wasn't an option. I bought these for my son for Christmas - he used them twice and they quit working. I called Motorola for assistance and they told me to do a couple of things (like change the batteries), none of which worked, and they weren't helpful at all. Spend a few extra bucks and get another brand and type.

The old ones were better It's good but I like the old ones better. The old version was more compact and easy to hold. These ones are smoother and more bulky. This one has more features and the range is decent for the shopping mall.

Just what I wanted.... These Motorola two-way radios are just what I hoped they would be. I only wanted them for my 4 year old to play with, as he enjoys going to different rooms of the house and talking to us like we're far away.

I can't comment on how well they work outside because we've never tried them for that. They were reasonably priced for what they were intended in my house, so I'm happy with them. And to answer another reviewer's question about how to turn them off, you need to hold the menu button down for a few seconds and it will shut off.

The directions state it, but you're probably like me where you don't always read them. You turn them on the same way.

great product I have used multiple Motorola products which worked "ok", but this Midland pair is much better.

They are more clear and seem to be of better quality. They are slightly heavier than motorolas. I have had them for only a few months so durability is unknown at this point. I would definitely recommend them. I use them for paintball.

Awesome Radio Great set of radio's. I have tried them at over 6 miles and they are crystal clear and work well. The earpiece and remote mic work well also.

Not waterproof! The overall feel of this product is great. It seems tough and of a good quality plastic material.

I haven't tested the complete 26-mile range, but it worked great across fields and the voice quality seemed good. There are some downsides though.

The included headset works, but it is not very comfortable and does not stay in your ear well.

The weight of the microphone tends to work the earbug loose as you walk. Using high power requires you to get an FCC license by law. This is stated on one of the first pages of the user's manual.

My biggest problem of all is that this radio is advertised as waterproof. Beware that their definition of "waterproof" is "can be held under light shower for 30 minutes." The designers of this radio did not put much effort into waterproofing the speaker holes.

If water with any degree of force hits contacts the unit by the speaker holes, the unit will readily take on water. Because of this you need to be careful not to drop the unit in a pond, etc, and you also need to be careful when rinsing the unit off.

Either of these actions will result in the unit not working until it dries off. It can take 1 to several days to dry off depending on how much water got in.
